A horse is an equine measuring more than 1.48 m at the withers (upper back at the base of the neck)
A pony is an equine measuring less than 1.48 m at the withers.
They are classified according to 4 categories:
- Pony A : less than 1.07m
- Pony B : between 1.07m and 1.30m
- Pony C : between 1.30m and 1.40m
- Pony D : between 1.40m and 1.48m

- A gelding : appellation which designates a castrated adult male horse
- A stallion : uncastrated adult male horse intended for breeding
- A foal : male horse baby. He is usually born after 11 months of gestation, in the spring
- A filly : female horse baby. She is usually born after 11 months of gestation, in the spring
- A yearling : Name given to the foal from the age of one year up to two or 4 years depending on the breed
