A pony and a horse

A horse is an equine measuring more than 1.48 m at the withers (upper back at the base of the neck)

A pony is an equine measuring less than 1.48 m at the withers.
They are classified according to 4 categories:

  • Pony A : less than 1.07m
  • Pony B : between 1.07m and 1.30m
  • Pony C : between 1.30m and 1.40m
  • Pony D : between 1.40m and 1.48m

  • A mare : adult female in the horse species.
  • A gelding : appellation which designates a castrated adult male horse
  • A stallion : uncastrated adult male horse intended for breeding
  • A foal : male horse baby. He is usually born after 11 months of gestation, in the spring
  • A filly : female horse baby. She is usually born after 11 months of gestation, in the spring
  • A yearling : Name given to the foal from the age of one year up to two or 4 years depending on the breed
