Carriage Driving
Before becoming a leisure activity and sport, driving was long the primary means of transportation. A competitive driving team consists of a carriage, one, two, or four horses, and a driver assisted by grooms. The carriage used is specifically designed for this sport and is equipped with disc brakes on modern models, with articulated shafts on 4-wheel carriages. All horses can be driven, though certain breeds have special predispositions for this discipline. Some teams, even at the highest level, can feature a surprising combination of horses where some gallow while others trot. The main objective for the driver is to maintain control over the turnout.
